The drug is called gantenerumab and is designed to attach to amyloid plaques in the brain and remove them. Could benefit patients in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, who could slow the progression of the disease while still able to remember.
Many researchers suspect that the appearance of such plaques in the brain may be a cause of the occurrence of this disease in which memory is lost, although this theory has not yet been proven definitively.

The Phase I study published in “Archives of Neurology” proved this substance in 16 Alzheimer’s patients, who were given two doses of gantenerumab and compared them with patients who received placebo for six months. For the head of Roche Global Translational Neuroscience Disease Area, Luca Santarelli, “these results and especially the rapidity of the effects observed in the elimination of amyloid plaques are very encouraging and pave the way for the development of a new treatment for Alzheimer’s.”
Most of the companies working on developing treatments for Alzheimer’s focus on studying the disease in its later stages and more debilitating. However, Roche’s strategy is to treat the disease at earlier stages. “We know that amyloid plaques accumulate for 15 years before the onset of dementia, why wait to remove them,” he asks.
Some 25 million people worldwide suffer from Alzheimer’s and is expected in the coming years the number of diagnoses rises dramatically with age of the great generation of “baby boom”. Thus, it is expected that this disease can affect, in 2030, about 63 million people and 114 million by 2050 worldwide, according to estimates cited by Roche.
